A Beginner’s Guide to Vaping - Introduction

If you’re brand-new to the world of vapes, electronic cigarettes and you need a quick vaping guide, you’ve come to the right place. Learning about vaping for beginners is important because, while vaping can seem a little confusing for someone who has never done it before, it’s actually pretty simple. Vaping devices can be broken down into three main elements, regardless of the size of the device.

Tank and coil

The first part of your vape that you need to know about is the tank and coil. These components are important because they determine how much power you’ll need and what type of vape juice you’ll want.

There are two main types of tank:

• Mouth to lung. Mouth to lung tanks have a more restrictive, tighter draw. That means that you can pull the vapour into your mouth before you inhale it, achieving an experience more like smoking. These tanks consume less power and e-liquid, so while they do come in different sizes and produce different amounts of vapour, the devices themselves are often quite small.
   
• Direct to lung. These tanks are generally larger and produce more vapour than mouth to lung varieties. When you use a direct to lung tank (as the name suggests), you’ll inhale the vapour directly into your lungs rather than letting it accumulate in your mouth first. Direct to lung tanks typically use higher-powered, lower-resistance, coils, so they tend to consume e-juice at higher rates – but they may offer more flavour, too.

The coil head inside the tank is the part that converts your e-liquid into vapour. It comprises a wick that absorbs e-liquid and a metal wire that heats up. You will need to replace your coil now and then (typically every one to four weeks) because they do degrade over time. Some good vaping tank tips include avoiding using too high of a wattage, avoiding letting your coil go completely dry, and being sure to prime new coils.

Vape juice

No vaping guide would be complete without information about vape juice, an essential part of your vaping routine. Also known as e-juice or e-liquid, vape juice contains four key ingredients: VG (vegetable glycerin), PG (propylene glycol), food flavourings, and nicotine (in most cases). In general, juices that contain more PG are thinner, produce a stronger throat hit but less vapour, and are more suitable for mouth to lung tanks. Higher-VG juices are thicker, produce more vapour, and are ideal for direct to lung tanks. There are endless flavours out there to experiment with, and you’ll soon discover a few favourites of your own. Because everyone has different tastes, it’s a good idea to start out with several flavours to try. You can also mix flavours to create your own once you’re comfortable with vaping itself.

Choosing the right level of nicotine content can take a little trial and error. If you aren’t sure where to start, it’s a good idea to try a lower nicotine strength at first – you can always go up. Nicotine salt e-liquids can provide a soother inhale and a faster rate of absorption (read: an experience more like smoking), so if you are trying to replace cigarettes with vaping, you might want to try this type of juice.

Battery/mod

Your battery, also known as the mod, is the source of power to your device. Batteries vary widely in terms of functionality. The physical size of the battery is often associated with the tank and coil being used. For example, batteries for vape pens and pod systems are typically small and simple, featuring either an automatic draw system or single button activation. These are probably the best vaping mods for beginners. However, batteries that allow you to change the wattage, voltage, temperature control, and power do provide a more customized vaping experience. When it comes to removable battery mods, you should generally keep extra sets charged for an uninterrupted vaping experience.
